Between the end of each year and the beginning of the next, we all sit down, think for a few minutes and go; “okay, these are my goals for this coming year”.
Make a million each month,
Get into XYZ fellowship,
Start ABC company and monetize it after 6 months, and finally,
Get married to the love of my life.
“Yeah, baby! This year is gonna be swole!”, we exclaim as we drop our pens and recline to the sight of the fresh new goals.
After the first few months, we mostly forget about our goals, as we engage in the distracting quagmires of the daily facets of life. Let me recommend a solution to this. Don’t be that “goal setting guy.”
But do not get me wrong. Let me explain.
At the start of this year, I set quite a few goals, but before the year split in half, I noticed that I had already accomplished 90 percent of my goals. Now, understand that these were not small goals.
It seemed that I had set goals that were lower than my capacity.
One compelling quote from Tony Robbins is that “Goal setting is the secret to a compelling future.” The chances that you will get what you want are significantly higher when you write them down as SMART goals.
Here is a summary of my achievements for 2022.
To avoid the pitfall of the “goal setting guy”, who forgets his goals shortly after the momentary burst of the excitement a few days after he sets his goals, BUILD HABITS.
Good habits keep you working towards your goals even when you don’t feel like it. Think of habit building as a wiring process, where you create new electrical connections in your brain, which are active even when you do not intentionally act on them.
Atomic Habits by James Clear makes the case that results have nothing to do with goals, and everything to do with systems. AKA habits.
“The real value of setting and achieving goals lies not in the rewards you receive; but in the person you become, as a result of reaching your goals.” ~ Robin Sharma
So go out there. Set goals. Build Habits.
